What looks like a small taco shop from the outside is actually a sit down restaurant. Not the trendiest place to look at and definitely a little older. Was it a little grimy in the bathroom? Sure. Was the bar shoddily put together? Sure. Did I care? Not one bit. Actually, all of the above may have added to this place’s charm.
Read MoreThis little supermarket in the heart of Back of the Yards doesn't look like much from the outside - and from the inside too, I guess, for that matter. There's just a couple aisles of food items, a small cold section and an impressive deli, I might add. But the true gem is the small taco grill in the back.
Read MoreWho's into some Jamaican Jerk Tacos?! I'm not going to lie you guys - I was excited about these having become a fan of Jamaican Jerk food when I was in Jamaica with IBK, PLUS when I scoped the place out on Yelp it looked deliciously unhealthy - can you say hi to melted cheese?
Read MoreIt's a tiny place, only a few tables, but I like the bright colors. This taco place is known for it's breakfast tacos! Which is exciting. I love me a good breakfast taco. Currently I get mine at Taco Bell (Hello, Breakfast Quesalupa) however, it might be nice to get one that was less processed. Thrillist recommended the Machacha Breakfast Taco (eggs, machacha beef pickled jalapenos, cilantro avocado, queso fresco) so I ordered that one, even though the first breakfast taco on the menu (chorizo, potatoes, queso fresco, pico de gallo) looked more appealing to me. This was my one and only mistake... and it was a bit of a big one.
Read MoreIt was such a cute little place, colorfully decorated - the poor waitress was managing the whole place by herself which sucked for her so I empathize that the service wasn't quite up to par. Though I can't gush enough about the location.
Read MoreThe tacos were well seasoned and cheap. I’m all about it. I wouldn't tell people to go out of the way for these tacos but they were exactly what I expected and needed out of a taco.
Read MoreNow if you are a taco aficionado like myself, you know that the Loop is a taco dead zone. So we were desperately looking for a place that just served tacos. And just across the street from Habanero there is a bar that just opened recently that is popular with the happy hour commuter crowd - Madison Tavern.
So, in we went for their tacos to consume as fast as we possibly could so I could get back to work. And surprisingly.... they were really good!
Read MoreI won't lie, folks. I'm a bit tipsy as I write this one - from all of my ONE margaritas that I had tonight. I officially have declared myself a two beer queer. But that's errelaphant of the tacos that I am currently eating (I ordered one to go).
This place... was a bit overwhelming. The menu is filled with a lot of ingredients that I just don't know. But, whatever! It was time to experiment. So I ordered with confidence!
Read MoreSo, first off, big thumbs up to the service here. They got us a table even though they had an event going on which meant IBK and I didn't need to scope out a last minute taco location.
Now - the tacos.
Read MoreDon't let this place fool you, it's not your average, run-of-the-mill mom-and-pop taco shop. The meat is well seasoned, the toppings are classic. Nothing to write home about but very good all the same. Raymond's twist? If you ask for cheese, they put a slice of melted american cheese BETWEEN the two corn tortillas.
Read More... I don't like giving bad reviews. But... I just wasn't impressed with Cookies and Carnitas. And I REALLY wanted to be. Edgewater is my old stomping grounds. I would pass Cookies and Carnitas all the time and was intrigued and always wanted to check it out. The sign outside says they have tacos, cookies, burgers, pizza... how is that not fascinating? It follows no pattern and who doesn't love a good juxtaposition?
Read MoreThe tuna poke taco was the one Thrillist recommended and I will get to that in a minute, because we ordered a few more that I want to get out of the way. They were v. good. Well seasoned. Tasty. Worth a trip, however after the stellar line up of taco places we’ve had thus far, Big & Littles non-fish tacos don't stand out.
The fish tacos, though….Holy crap.
Read MoreI don't have that much to say about Zacatacos. It was quite good and there was nothing wrong with the tacos. If I was in Berwyn again, I would stop in, but nothing particularly wowed me.
Read MoreThis was our first Pilsen location and we ordered: the Pilsen taco, Al Pastor taco, a Fish Taco I Can't Remember the Name Of (Ahh!), the Cerveza taco, and La Vaca taco
Read MoreBullhead Cantina felt like an oasis when we walked in to it's dark confines - it was a warm contrast to the frigid temperatures outside. Additionally, they actually had a Taco Tuesday special! (Seriously, when we started this in November, this was the first place to actually have a Taco Tuesday special. I KNOW! It's like these taco places don't understand how special Tuesdays are.)
Read MoreSo, I've been to Big Star before. I'm a 26 year old woman living in Chicago - I'd have to be living under a rock to not have given it a try. However, my first experience left me unimpressed. The food was only okay and the vibe, while delightful, only slightly made up for it. Definitely not something I would wait hours for.
However, since I decided to be officially OFFICIAL about this taco tour. It only seemed fitting that I give Big Star a second chance.
